Ok, so I'm actually quite new to the Resident Evil OC experience, having only created the ONE whom I have yet to publish since I'm still working out the kinks, and I've came up with these "personal rules" as a reminder of who I would like my RE OC to be and what I don't want her to become...

Rule nº1: Don't Be a Canon Hero

- The canon characters are perfectly capable of accomplishing the final goal of canon stories and don't need you to jump in and steal their thunder, best you should do is help or interfere, but leave the boss kill shot for canon...

Rule nº2: Alice Ain't Canon

- So you want to give your OC super powers?, change fandom. Powers in RE come with a price which usually involve bad complexion, seriously bad hair day, the occasional tentacle or shoulder eye, the uncontrollable urge to kill, eat or infect any and everyone around you, and a short lifespan. I mean, not even Wesker got it together and he was practically bred for it.

Rule nº3: Long Lost brother/sister/cousin/father/mother/son/daughter/

WHATEVER

- What is the need to mess up canon families? Can't you come up with a character on your own? Why, for crying out loud, must they be related to canon characters? There's no need for it! Most of the time (well...... the rare occasion...) your character is interesting enough without needing to be blood related to an existing MAIN canon character. There are surname name generators and lists online, you don't need to use a canon one...

Rule Nº4: How Did YOU Get Here?

- The reason why there are so many main canon characters to Resident Evil is that there are several different stories to tell. several paths to follow. Don't insert your OC in the field on every single canon event especially when there are several ones that actually happen at the same time and you cannot possibly be everywhere at once... unless you have clones or the ability to replicate, but that's on another rule.

Rule Nº5: Cut Back on Doppelgangers

- Make your character original, original background story, original look, original set of skills. We know canon characters are AWESOME and have equally awesome skills, but they already have these skills. If you're going to add a character to a fandom, be original, add something that isn't there, complement the set don't add unnecessary copies just so you can replace an existing canon character. BE ORIGINAL!

That is all I have to say. Good Night

In this fandom these are certainly rules to live by....why would anyone want to take a moment of glory away from the canon characters?
